Selected Experience

Commercial Disputes

  • Represented a foreign state in a dispute with a Kazakh contractor arising out of lease and mortgage agreements
  • Represented companies within an international banking group (Netherlands) in a dispute concerning amendments to syndicated financing arrangements in connection with a material change of circumstances
  • Representing a pharmaceutical company in an administrative dispute concerning the publication of information about medicinal products on the Internet. As a result of the proceedings, the court declared the order of the state authority unlawful.

  • Representing a gold mining company in a dispute with the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan concerning the unlawful refusal to extend mining licences.

  • Representing several mining companies in a series of related disputes with the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan concerning the unlawful unilateral termination of gold exploration and mining contracts. In one of the disputes, the termination of the contract was found unlawful due to the Ministry’s bad-faith conduct.

  • Representing a gold mining company in a dispute with the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan concerning the exercise of an exclusive right to obtain a solid minerals mining licence.

International Arbitration

  • Represented a Panamanian company in obtaining interim measures over the assets of a Tajik company in support of arbitration in Sweden; the interim measures were successfully granted

Foreign court proceedings

  • Assisting a Russian construction holding in a series of proceedings challenging interim measures granted by an Italian court. The interim measures were successfully discharged.

  • Preparing expert opinions for the High Court of Justice of England and Wales on matters of Russian law, including the exclusive jurisdiction of Russian courts, anti-suit injunctions and proper service of foreign parties.
